Moffat County High School junior John Kirk, left, swims the 100-meter backstroke against Montrose High School on Friday at MCHS. The MCHS boys varsity swimming team fell to Montrose, but coach Anita Reynolds said the team will immediately start preparing for the 4A regional meet at Mesa State College on Friday and May 14.

Matt Hulstine popped his head out of the Moffat County High School pool Friday and looked up to see his team cheering him on.

Hulstine, a MCHS sophomore, slapped teammate John Kirk's hand with a smile on his face.

Swimming in the only home meet of the season, Hulstine narrowly beat Montrose High School swimmer Michael Barnosky in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Hulstine's official time was 1 minute, 9.18 seconds. Barnosky's was 1 minute, 9.32 seconds.

"When (Barnosky) and I race, it is always close," Hulstine said after the event. "He beat me last weekend, so it felt really good because I really wanted to beat him in my home pool."

The MCHS boys varsity swimming team lost to Montrose, 158-99, but coach Anita Reynolds said she was proud of her team.

"We really wanted a good showing in front of our home crowd, and I think the team did awesome," she said. "They were all fired up and wanted to prove the pool is worth saving, and they did that."

Hulstine also took first place in the 200-meter individual medley relay and was part of the 200-meter freestyle relay, but the junior said it was the 100-meter breaststroke he was most worried about.

"(Barnosky) would beat me off the wall, but I was able to catch him in the middle," he said. "He is my main competition on the Western Slope so when we race we always take time off."

The Bulldogs swim in a meter pool while most pools they compete in are yard pools.

Hulstine said his time in the 100-meter breaststroke Friday was right near his best time of the season in a yard pool.

Reynolds said having a meter pool is the equivalent of having home-field advantage in swimming.

"In a 100-meter race, the swimmers are swimming about five yards extra than they would in a 100-yard race," she said. "We practice in this pool every week, so we know how to make those adjustments."

Senior Justin Prosser was the only other Bulldog to take first in an event, winning the 50-meter freestyle in 27.76 seconds.

Kirk, an MCHS junior, took second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:27.62) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:16.74).

Freshman Colter Tegtman finished second in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 2.97 seconds, and both the 200-meter medley and the 400-meter freestyle relays took second.

The team's next competition will be the 4A regional meet Friday and May 14 at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.

It will be the last opportunity for the swimmers to qualify for the 4A state swim meet May 20 and 21 in Denver.

All three relays have already qualified, and Hulstine has qualified in the 100-meter breaststroke, the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.

Reynolds said the team would take this week easy in preparation for the last-chance qualifying meet.

"It is the end of school and the end of the season, so we have to get everyone's head right," she said. "We are going to taper down so their muscles can rebuild and they can be well rested for the meet."

For Hulstine, he said his goal is to get his best time of the season in the 100-meter breaststroke.

"I would like to get my time below 1 minute," he said. "I have to come off the turns better, but that is where I want to be."
