With two outs in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday, Ben Williams stepped up to the plate.

In the second game of a double header against Battle Mountain High School, Dylon Camilletti stood on third and Graig Medvesk was on second at the baseball diamond at Craig Middle School.

The Moffat County High School boys varsity baseball team was tied with the Huskies 4-4.

“I knew I just had to get a hit,” Williams said. “I just needed a single to get a run batted in.”

Williams popped the ball high into shallow left field and just out of the reach of the Huskies, shortstop to send Camilletti safely home.

The Bulldogs (3-4 overall, 3-1 Western Slope League) scored one more run in the ninth to secure a 6-4 victory and sweep the Huskies in the team’s home-opening double header.

Williams, a Hayden High School senior, said after he stopped on second base, he knew the victory was in hand.

“I knew we had the win wrapped up because Bubba was pitching great,” he said.

MCHS sophomore Bubba Ivers wrapped up the game for the Bulldogs with a one-two-three bottom of the ninth.

Ivers came into the second game in the sixth inning to relieve Mark Doolin and didn’t allow a run in the four innings he pitched.

This was the second extra-innings victory in four games the Bulldogs.

MCHS beat Eagle Valley, 15-9, in nine innings on April 2.

“I think we have really good hitters and we use that to our advantage,” Williams said. “We don’t get down on ourselves and we keep battling.”

The Bulldogs took an early 4-0 lead after a two-run homer by MCHS senior Kulen Turner in the top of the first inning of the second game, but the Huskies (1-5 overall, 0-3 WSL) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to pull within one.

Battle Mountain scored another run in the third inning to tie it at 4-4.

Head coach Justin Folley said his seniors — Williams, Turner, Camilletti and Medvesk — are the ones who push the whole team when the game is close.

“In close games, (the seniors) are the ones who want to get the win,” Folley said. “Their leadership sparks the rest of the team and they roll with it.”

The first game wasn’t as tight for the Bulldogs.

MCHS scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the fifth inning to win, 4-1.

Ivers’ two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth sealed the victory for his team.

Williams pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs in the first game.

“Ben pitched all nine innings against Eagle Valley and pitched another complete game (Tuesday),” Folley said. “He is the real bulldog on the team, and he will go out and do what he has to do to win.”

Folley said it was nice for his team to get to play in front of the home crowd.

“The guys take a lot of momentum by having our fans at the games and cheering us on,” he said. “We had a wet field (Tuesday), but we practice on it and we expected it, so I think it gave us an advantage.

“This is our home field and this is where we win ball games.”

In the team’s previous games, the defense has struggled, Folley said, but the unit stepped it up against Battle Mountain.

“I think we had one mistake and that was off a hard-hit ball, which can go either way,” he said. “The guys read the balls well and kept the balls in front of them to make plays.”

The Bulldogs will play a double header against Rangely High School on Thursday in Rangely.
