Mary Pat Dunn: Remembering the world class Cosgriff Hotel in Craig

Mary Pat Dunn

In the mid-1950s when Craig’s Cosgriff Hotel was the social center of town, a display of more than 15 Gerard Delano paintings was installed throughout the hotel. The exhibit, titled “Passing of the Old West” featured large colorful oil paintings by Delano who specialized in Western themes. The subjects of these paintings ranged from mountain men and miners to Navajo Indians and pioneers. The exhibit remained in place until the mid-1970s, when the collection was sold.

The Museum of Northwest Colorado recently has acquired one of the paintings that hung in the Cosgriff Hotel titled “Mountain Men” and is readying it for exhibit. The staff would like to re-create the 1950s ambiance of that classy hotel in the exhibit, and is seeking the assistance of area residents for that purpose.

If anyone has any items from the hotel that they would loan to the museum for this display, it would be greatly appreciated. For more information, call 970-824-6360.
