Mary Jo Brown: Weather playing tricks on us

The weather is playing peek-a-boo with us as the sun peeks around clouds and the temperature goes up and down. A friend of mine used to say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change.” The song “The Breeze and I” goes along with what the weather is doing now as the wind seems to come up regularly in the afternoons. I like the briskness of it when it starts, but it seems to get cold suddenly — or maybe it’s me, as I seem to have started to notice the changes in temperature more as I get older.

I enjoy watching the big evergreen across the street as it gently sways in the breeze. Some of the birds seem to be returning, and I see more blackbirds and sparrows lately. The signs of spring are becoming more evident as you now can see the grass turning greener, and even though there are still some signs of snow, the plants are looking better.

Something else I have noticed is how much work needs to be done to bring the full beauty of what awaits under the remains of winter. Mother Nature has a way of inspiring people to decorate and bring the splendor of nature’s palette into view. Later on, the season can come indoors by bringing in the perfume and colors of spring as we throw open windows and doors to let the air of winter out and the joy of spring in. The change is a remedy for that tired, cooped-up feeling. We tend to do some changing indoors also. Putting away the heavy winter things we have been using and packing away all the warm items needed to make it through the cold days of winter. It makes me tired just thinking about all that work!

Like most things that are worth doing, it takes time to accomplish what we want, but in the end, it is a beautiful feeling that goes along with knowing what you have done to have a summer house with a little help from nature. Not all of us can afford a month or so in the country or on some beach, but by adding some flowers, light colors and moving furniture around, we can transform our home into a refreshing retreat. Like every blessing, creating a summer house starts with a state of mind. As I look around my apartment, there isn’t much room to rearrange any furniture, but I can add fresh colors here and there. I am impatient to be able to do more of what I want to get done, but I know I have to pace myself, and an upbeat attitude is part of the process of refreshing not only my house but also my outlook on life. In the meantime, I thank God for the beauty around me and the ability to see and enjoy it.

Happy birthday wishes to Verniece Self, Terry Bennett, Rodney Herman, Patricia Nicodemus and Dale Potter.

Get well and speedy recovery to Patrick Gallegos, Betty Herrera, Dolores Lopez and Theresa Rendon,

A noon potluck is Friday at Sunset Meadows I.
