Man killed in rollover accident

Luke Graham

A man was killed early Wednesday when his Ford pickup traveled off the road, rotated clockwise and rolled several times.

Christy Thomas Brashear Jr. of Rifle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rio Blanco County Coroner.

The Colorado State Patrol said Brashear was traveling southbound on Colorado Highway 13, about 18 miles north of Rifle, at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

His truck traveled off the right side of the road then back off the left side and rolled 4 1/2 times, the State Patrol reported. The vehicle finally came to rest on the east side of the road after rolling through a barbed wire fence.

Brashear was not ejected but stayed inside the vehicle and was properly restrained, according to the State Patrol.

A passerby came across the wreckage and used his cell phone to call for help. Rifle Fire, Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s deputies and Colorado State Patrol responded to the scene.

The coroner pronounced Brashear dead from injuries sustained as a result of the motor vehicle accident.

CSP said initial investigation suggests Brashear’s truck was traveling 78 mph in the posted 65 mph zone. Neither drugs nor alcohol are thought to have played a role in the accident, according to the State Patrol.
