LSRV track and field teams have good showing at 1st day of regional meet

For the boys of Little Snake River Valley (Wyo.) School to bring home their third state title this school year, they first must get through the 1A West regional track and field meet.

After Friday's first day of the two-day meet in Lander, Wyo., the Rattlers are in a great position, heading into the final day in first place.

"All the kids came out (Friday), and it seemed whatever race they were in, they had a personal best," head coach Mike Bates said. "They came out strong and we had a lot of kids place and a lot of kids qualify for the finals (today)."

The LSRV six-man football team won the 1A state title in November 2010 and the boys varsity basketball team followed up with a state title in March.

Seven athletes were on both the football and basketball teams and are competing on the track team this season — Chance Englehart, Miles Englehart, Sean Rietveld, Daniel Wille, Rex Stanley, Grayson Lee and Conner Lee.

Miles and Grayson helped lead the 4-by-100-meter relay to a second place finish and Miles also took third in high jump

Conner placed in the 800-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, second and third, respectively, and Chance took seventh in pole vault.

Stanley and Rietveld had the only first place finishes for the boys team on the first day in the long jump and discus, respectively.

Bates said he couldn't give credit to just one individual, but rather the team as a whole.

"It would be really hard to pick out one individual," he said. "Everyone is running and performing great right now and it is the right time of the season."

While the boys team may be going for a third state title, the girls team held their own Friday, Bates said.

Also currently in first place, the girls placed in almost every final on Friday.

Shelby McKee took second in the 800-meter run and Kelsey Kazmar finished seventh in the 3,200-meter run.

The girls 4-by-100-meter relay took fourth and Cierra Williams took third in shot put.

Heading into day two, Bates said both teams are in a good position to win the meet.

"Almost everyone has already qualified for state and they had an awesome first day," he said. "I told the team it was like half time and they have a good chance to be regional champions."

After the Friday's prelims, Bates said Wille is in a good position to have one of the best performances today.

Wille will be trying to run the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 52 seconds.

Bates said having three other teammates in the event would help Wille.

"(Friday), we had three guys run between 54 and 55 seconds, and Dan ran a 53," he said. "I think if the team runs the race right, they can push Dan into the low 50s like he has been wanting too."

For the girls team, Bates said Lydia Skaleberg will be looking to qualify for the state meet in the 1,600-meter run.

Bates said a regional title would go a long way in helping the boys earn their third state title.

"The guys told me this week that this state title will be a lot harder than football and basketball," he said. "Track is more of an individual meet and if they can win regionals, I think it would be a boost to their moral heading into state."
