With winter waiting around the corner, a nonprofit organization is gearing up to help residents stave off the cold.

On Monday, Love INC of the Yampa Valley kicked off its annual coat drive. The program provides coats free of charge to area residents who need them.

“We don’t want anybody to be cold in our Colorado climate,” Love INC executive director Pat Jones said.

Love INC acts as a clearinghouse for area churches. In coming weeks, it will collect used coats, mittens, scarves, hats and other outerwear for distribution.

Unlike some Love INC programs, participants don’t have to meet any eligibility requirements.

Distribution will be limited to one coat per person. However, parents may pick up coats for their children.

Every year, the organization collects, cleans and gives away about 500 coats, Jones said.

She’s aiming to collect around that number of coats this year.

The program got a leg up this year when donors brought in about 40 toddlers’ coats.

“What a blessing,” Jones said. “Little kids’ coats run out first every time.”

Donors can drop off coats at the Love INC office, 656 School St. or at Loyd’s Cleaners, 552 Breeze St., through Oct. 11.

Coat distribution is scheduled to take place in Craig starting Oct. 20 at Calvary Baptist Church.

Distribution sites also are planned for Meeker, Hayden, Rangely and surrounding areas.

Tickets on sale for Love INC fundraiser

Tickets now are available for one of Love INC’s largest fundraisers of the year.

The second annual pig roast is scheduled to take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion. The event raises funds for the organization’s general operating expenses, including telephone and electric service at its Breeze Street office.

The event is one of Love INC’s three main fundraisers and provides “the money that you need to just keep your nonprofit running for a year,” Jones said.

The fundraiser brought in more than $2,100 last year. This time, Jones hopes it will raise more – between $3,000 and $4,000.

She’s organizing a silent auction that will feature a spectrum of items and services, from haircuts to hay to homemade pizzas, to help make up the difference.

Ultimately, she hopes the fundraiser will help Love INC recover funds it has spent on recent projects, including one that provides school necessities to needy children.

“We just finished going through summer doldrums,” she said. “And, with the school supply drive we’ve just spent so much money.”

Local churches help keep Love INC in operation. Still, the nonprofit likes to keep extra money on hand for when it needs it.

“We really need a good infusion to pull us back up again,” Jones said.

Tickets purchased in advance cost $10 for individuals and $35 for families and may be purchased at the Love INC office or at most local churches.
