Steamboat Springs — It took a small community to clear the road Wednesday morning after a log truck rolled and scattered its load of lodgepole pine trees along Routt County Road 129.

Patrick Scott, 51, of North Carolina, was traveling from the Routt National Forest to Montrose. He was about 10 miles north of Steamboat Springs when investigators said he took a left-hand curve too fast. According to the Colorado State Patrol, he went off the side of the road, over corrected and then the truck rotated before rolling.

The driver was helped out of the truck and was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Trooper Luke Zellman said there were no indications that a medical issue caused the crash. Witnesses reported seeing the truck driving earlier, and they believed it was going too fast.

Scott disputed he was driving excessively fast, and he was ticketed for careless driving, Zellman said.

North Routt Fire Protection District firefighters treated the man at the scene, but there was a problem. The road was blocked by the logs, and the ambulance could not get through.

An ambulance from Steamboat came to transport the man to YVMC, and by the time it arrived at the scene, Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers as well as bystanders muscled the logs off the road to clear a lane for the ambulance.

About 20 gallons of diesel leaked from the truck. Rocky Mountain Towing cleaned up the scene, and the trucking company was going to come and pick up the logs.

On Tuesday, troopers responded to another rollover crash south of Yampa on Colorado Highway 131. The driver of a truck pulling a trailer with 30 bulls was going left on a curve and kept going left, Sgt. Scott Elliott said.

The driver was not hurt, and the cows were fine. The California man was ticketed for careless driving.
