It’s a busy night in Moffat County.

To start, many state and local candidates are participating in one of the few remaining debates before the November general election.

The event, slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at JW Snacks, 210 E. Victory Way, kicks off with a debate between Republican Dave DeRose and unaffiliated candidate John Kinkaid for Moffat County Commission’s District 1 seat.

Following DeRose and Kinkaid will be a debate for Moffat County Commission’s District 2 seat between Republican Chuck Grobe and American Constitution Party candidate Rick Barnes.

Both debates will last 30 minutes, follow no specific format and feature questions focused on a variety of topics including natural resources, economic development, governance, tourism, education and county relations.

After the county commission debates event attendees will hear speeches from Brett Barkey, R-Hayden, an uncontested candidate for 14th Judicial District Attorney, and Emily Tracy, D-Breckenridge, who is running for Colorado Senate District 8 against current HD57 Rep. Randy Baumgardner, R-Cowdrey.

Baumgardner is unable to attend and is sending a surrogate speaker to address Moffat County voters on his behalf.

Because she would not have an opponent for the debate, Tracy was invited to speak about her positions on a variety of pertinent state issues.

The event will conclude with a 50-minute debate between Jo Ann Baxter, D-Craig, and Bob Rankin, R-Carbondale, for the office of Colorado House District 57.

Questions in the HD57 debate will focus on jobs and the economy, energy and natural resources, education, and telecommunications.

There also will be a two-minute lightning round in which the candidates will be asked to provide 30-second answers on anticipated Colorado legislation pertaining to four different social issues.

Bryce Jacobson, editor and publisher of the Craig Daily Press, is serving as moderator for the debate, which is free and open to the public.

The debate also will stream live online.

On the other side of town starting at 7 p.m., the MCHS football team will take on Glenwood Springs

The Bulldogs are looking to get back above .500 in a clash set to take place at the Bulldog Proving Grounds.

On paper, it looks like another matchup of even teams in Western Slope League play. Though just 2-4 on the year, Glenwood had to begin its season in difficult fashion.

The Demons played their first three games of the season at Conifer, vs. Palisade and at Rifle, all ranked in the top 10 of the Denver Post Football Poll.

After the difficult start, Glenwood rattled off consecutive wins over Steamboat Springs (55-12) and Delta (41-20), before losing last week to Eagle Valley.

The Bulldogs beat Steamboat, but lost to Delta, Rifle and Eagle Valley, making it tough to see many differences between the teams based on common opponents.

Moffat County’s pass defense will have to be at its best, as the Demons have gained more through the air this season than on the ground. Quarterback Travis Lundin has attempted more than 15 passes in every game this season except one, and is completing them nearly 70 percent of the time.

Auston Tribble has been the biggest benefactor of that passing attack, catching 33 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns through Glenwoods game vs. Delta.

Both teams are fighting for their lives in the WSL. Moffat County is 1-3 and Glenwood 2-3 in league play, but the winner of tonight’s game will be back in the top half of the league.
