Letter: Family of missing teen thanks emergency services
To the editor:
We would like to thank Moffat County Search and Rescue and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office for the wonderful job they did Sunday night when our son, Justin McAlexander, and his friends, Jessie and Mason Burke, were stuck in a ravine on Freeman Reservoir.
The Moffat County Search and Rescue team is incredible. They went over and above the call of duty with a great deal of dedication to finding these boys.
Some of these rescuers were out there for more than 15 hours looking for these boys and they never once stopped. They are an awesome group who are very skilled at what they do and Moffat County is very lucky to have their skills and dedication.
We would also like to thank the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office for their dedication as well, especially deputy Todd Wheeler and sheriff Tim Jantz. They were at Freeman as well the entire night and did an excellent job.
We would like to thank Richard Oberwitte, Jack Reed, and Dario Geourgiou who so willingly came out in the middle of the night to assist with finding the boys. They know the mountain well and were an extreme amount of help. They also spent several hours on that mountain searching until the boys were found.
We would like to thank the excellent ambulance crew that responded and assisted the boys once they were brought off the mountain.
We would like to thank Routt County Search and Rescue for being on standby as well as Yampa River State Parks for being on standby as well. They were both en route to Freeman when the boys were finally found.
We would also like to thank Yampa River State Parks for teaching our Boy Scouts troop several of those survival skills that Justin used during that night.
Finally, we would like to thank Jack and Jo Reed for going up the next day and getting our other sled for us, and Michelle Foulk for bringing us hot coffee and doughnuts and just being there for moral support.
We were very lucky that Justin could keep his wits about him and use the skills he learned. We are very lucky to have all the dedicated people in Moffat County that were so willing to go above and beyond to find them. Because of that, the boys came off the mountain safe and are all doing well.
No amount of thanks can ever express how much we appreciate all of you and the tireless jobs you do.
Bruce, Bobbi, Chris, Kirsten and Justin McAlexander
