Letter: Fact checking SB12-002

To the editor:

In the referenced article “Three who agree,” you state “SB12-002, Concerning the Authorization of Civil Unions, would have granted same sex couples the right to marry.”

Please print a correction to this statement in that SB12-002 would have allowed same sex couples to file a civil union with the State of Colorado, thus allowing them similar, (while not yet equal) rights and privileges as held by the majority.

It is misunderstandings like this that keeps our local population confused and unclear about the rights denied to gay Coloradans on a daily basis.

I would like to add a post-script to Representative Randy Baumgardner.

He is apparently one of the confused of our local population. In this same article, he proudly claims that he voted no on SB12-002 because “the Colorado Constitution says marriage is between one man and one woman. If you support civil unions, then you voted against your own Constitution.”

As you request of others, Representative Baumgardner, please get your facts right. Civil unions are not marriages.

Marriage is a religious sacrament, a civil union allows a legal avenue for a couple to conjoin assets and necessities of life facilitating their ability to maintain a household and raise a family.

Perhaps understanding the bill before you vote on it will allow you to vote more reasonably the next time the issue comes to a vote if we are unfortunate enough to have you represent us in the state senate.
