Les and Bonnie Hampton: Thank you first responders

The good news is we and several of our neighbors in the Elkhead area awoke in our own beds this morning, July 28, 2016. We thank the Lord, Craig Volunteer firefighters, and 25 feet of road separating our homes from yesterday’s wildfire. As I stood along the road yesterday watching a wall of flames roll down the hill in the direction of my home and outbuildings, the flames were preceded by smoke so thick that I could not see across the road. It is at times like this that you realize there is nothing that you can do. One sees that forces are in motion and are out of control. Until you recognize that firefighters working behind that wall of smoke and flames are actually making progress in their efforts to combat shifting winds and the destruction which is heading your way!

Yes, the fire was stopped at the edge of the road and words alone are inadequate to express our gratitude to the firefighters involved. These firefighters include the on-scene Commander KC Hume, at least five units from the Craig Rural Fire Department, one BLM unit, and one unit from the West Routt Fire District. Yes, the fire is out, no one was hurt, and numerous homes and families are today returning to normal.
