Craig police officers and Moffat County sheriff’s deputies responded to a “domestic disturbance” and gunshots that ended in the suspect taking his own life Tuesday night, according to a news release from the Craig Police Department.

At around 9:14 p.m., law enforcement arrived at a residence on Crest Drive in Craig, and “confirmed the presence of an armed individual” in the home, said the news release.

Due to the possible threat to public safety, the Moffat County Special Response Team was called to the residence.

The Moffat County Special Response Team is comprised of officers from the Craig Police Department and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, according to the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office website. Members of the Special Response Team are required to complete a one-week SWAT school and maintain fitness and “marksmanship qualifications.”

The Special Response Team is “used for higher risk law enforcement operations, such as serving high-risk search warrants,” states the website.

According to the news release, crisis negotiators with the Craig and Hayden police departments “made repeated attempts” to communicate with the man in the home.

A drone with the Steamboat Springs Police Department was called to the residence and used to fly over the scene after law enforcement did not hear from the man after “several hours,” the release continues.

Live drone footage showed a man lying on the ground with a “suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound” between two vehicles near the residence, the news release states.

Law enforcement identified the man as 52-year-old Shaun Burdick, of Craig.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be released as appropriate,” the release states. “No officers or other individuals were injured during the incident.”

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call the Craig Police Department at 970-824-8111.
