Kate Grobe: The lasting gift of a difficult decision

By Kate Grobe, Director of Yampa Valley Pregnancy Center

I’ve often been asked what I do at Yampa Valley Pregnancy Center.

My volunteers and I get to meet people and help during difficult times.

We get to hear life stories and get to know people who come to us. It’s that process of getting to know people and hearing so many stories that can be challenging and yet rewarding.

We strive to meet needs and educate people so they can make the most informed decisions through the various obstacles they face.

Some of those obstacles are indeed complicated. There are pressures from family, friends, peer groups and the community that weigh on each man and woman.

I’d like to share a story quite similar to many I’ve heard. It’s not a long story, but it’s about difficult choices and the people affected by them.

A teenage girl learns she’s pregnant, but she’s not married.

She displays the courage to accept her situation and carry the child.

Her fiancé knows it’s not his child she’s carrying. He struggles with what he should do, but ultimately accepts them both and adopts the child.

They face a culture that judges their actions. They face questions and whispers as they pass others.

The situation is not easy, but they both stand by the decisions they made.

When the time comes, the child is born without any other family members there to support the mother and father.

Not knowing that this boy would someday change the world, they still struggled through the pressures and gave him every opportunity they could.

They gave the rest of us the gift of Jesus Christ.
