K-9 search nets drugs

Amy Hamilton

The second time is the charm for Craig Police in arresting a Wyoming man for allegedly carrying drugs in his vehicle.

Mark Anthony Robinson, 24, was arrested Sunday as the result of a vehicle search with the help of a drug-sniffing dog.

Police said they found a residue that tested positive for methamphetamine in seven small “jeweler’s” bags in the 1997 silver Ford F-150 Robinson was driving.

Robinson was arrested Feb. 11 on a similar violation, police said. At the time, police searched Rob-inson’s vehicle with a drug-sniffing dog and found five jeweler’s baggies, one of which had a small amount of a white substance that tested positive for meth, said Lt. John Forgay of the Craig Police De-part-ment.

In the February incident, Robin-son was arrested on charges of possession of more than 1 gram of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and a traffic violation for driving without insurance in the March 13 incident. He also faces a felony charge for a violation of bail bond conditions.

Robinson has a driver’s license and license plates out of Wyoming but was staying at the Craig Motel.

Robinson’s case is an example of the kinds of cases that Craig police increasingly are handling.

Craig Police officers reported an 81 percent increase in drug and narcotic violations in 2004 compared with the previous year.

“One reason we’re seeing these (kinds of violations) is that we have a (drug-sniffing) dog,” Forgay said. “We have the tools available. We just have to use them.”
