Judi Hunt: Gun-happy officers have no place in law enforcement

I was in the doctor’s office talking with the other people in the waiting room. I reiterated a recent event that had saddened me and my family. One of the women asked me to write a letter to the paper so that the people’s voice could be heard.

Here goes: My guard dog Brody was gone one day. I was very worried when he hadn’t come home by the next morning and called the dog warden. She told me that she heard on the radio that my dog had been shot and killed by a Moffat County sheriff’s deputy.

I called the deputy, and he said Brody had cornered a deer.

The incident occurred one road up from where I lived. The officer did not bother to call me on his car phone to ask me to come get my dog. I had never had any summons before about our dog roaming.

Brody was a very gentle and kind dog who never would have hurt anyone. We raised him from a puppy two years ago. We miss him a lot. The deputy asked me to come to his office so he could give me a summons.

I think that law keepers in our community, in any community, are here to defend and protect the people, not purposely hurt or cause them harm. It is also my opinion that hostile, gun-happy officers do not belong in law enforcement.
