Josie Burch: Deer are not a threat

To the editor:

I walk my dog just about every day. This summer, while on one of my walks, I came across a deer laying in someone’s yard.

The deer did not jump up, did not even move. She just laid there, very still. She laid so still, my dog didn’t even know she was there, my dog didn’t even lift her head.

The next day and several days after that when we would walk by that house, there the deer was either laying there, eating the grass (there was plenty since the house was empty), or eating the leaves off of the trees. In all those times, that deer did not bother us even once. She just stood or laid there so still my dog never noticed her.

I came across a garter snake once that scared both me and my dog a lot worse than that deer ever did.

This year Kevin shares his story of hope and celebration of life with his presentation Cracked, Not Broken as we explore the critical and relevant topic of mental health.

I do agree that people need to stop feeding the deer. It is only common sense that if you feed something, it will keep coming back.

I learned that when I fed the friends of my children — feed them once and they will continue to come back.

Deer are no different.

I have lived here for 42 years and I remember when I was young, my grandmother and I used to take walks and my grandmother would carry a stick to beat the dogs that came after us, not the deer.
