John Vandelinder: Bulldog beat for Oct. 28

John Vandelinder

The fall sports season has pretty much come to a close, with the football team hosting Cortez in the season’s final event Friday.

Winter sports kick off the first week of December, so MCHS sports fans won’t have to wait long until the action resumes once again.

Let’s take a look:

Cross Country

Sitting on top of the beat the entire fall sports season, the Bulldog cross country team didn’t disappoint Saturday at the state championship meet.

Senior Alicia Nelson did what she set out to do as the season began: become the state champion.

She did, and in convincing fashion.

I know 14 seconds doesn’t sound like much, but in running, it’s an eternity.

Gold medals are won and lost in fractions of a second, but Nelson obviously didn’t have to worry about fractions Saturday.

She placed seventh as a sophomore and fourth as a junior, so it was only logical that she take the annual three steps up this year and win.

Her title is the 17th in school history, capping off a stellar career that boasts numerous individual titles and back-to-back-to-back regional championships.

Senior Colt Criswell went out with a bang, knocking time off all year on his way to his fastest time ever recorded at state.

The team will lose Nelson and Criswell, but sophomores Maddy Jourgensen and Chris Zirkle appear more than ready to take over as top dogs on this team.

Zirkle already led the boys team all season – which should happen again in 2009 – while Jourgensen won’t have to finish runner-up to Nelson anymore.

The Bulldogs lost Friday at Glenwood Springs, but hey, what did you expect against the No. 1 team in the state?

Moffat County played the game they wanted to – chewing up the clock in an attempt to keep the ball out of Glenwood’s hands – but when the Demons did get the ball, they did what they do best.

They scored, scored and scored again.

If I know the coaches as well as I think, this team is getting ready to play its Super Bowl on Friday.

Cortez visits the Bulldog Proving Grounds in the season finale.

The playoffs are out of the question, but surpassing last season’s win total of three games is more than just a possibility.

In the beginning of the season I predicted this team would win four games, and it’s looking like I could be right.

Moffat County has a chance to close the season on a high note, win more games than last year, and send seniors Hunter Zellers, Lyle Schaffner and Ethan Robinson out in winning fashion – at home.

I only hope that every football fan in Moffat County turns up to cheer their team on in its last game of 2008.
