The Bulldogs won both the boys and girls overall title of Friday’s Clint Wells Invitational, and while having a full roster was beneficial, having multiple first-place finishes didn’t hurt either, winning 16 individual events, girls nine and boys seven.
Kayla Pinnt and Shandon Hadley each swept the 100- and 200-meter dash events, but just as she crossed the finish line in the 200, Hadley had something better awaiting his girlfriend than the traditional Clint Wells championship t-shirt — a bouquet of flowers and a sign that read, “Can I sprint with you to prom?” which she promptly accepted before he went to win his own race.
Both seniors were a crucial part of the relay teams as well, Kayla anchoring both the 4×100 and 4×200 girls groups, which won along with the 4×400 and 4×800 teams, mixed and matched with Ary Shaffer, Selena Hernandez, Emma Samuelson, Quinn Pinnt, Mattie Jo Duzik, Allie Dilldine Madysen Cramer and Josie Timmer.
Timmer stood in for Samuelson in the 400 relay, which shifted Cramer to run the final leg, during which she surpassed her own earlier time in the 400 dash.
The team of Hadley, Victor Silva, Kaden Hafey and Eddie Smercina won another boys 4×100, while the 4×800 group needed to find a strong replacement for Diego Quezada, who was out with a broken foot.
Riley Allen, Carter Severson and Connor Scranton found what they were looking for with Mikinzie Klimper, who helped them win the two-mile relay in his first time ever with a long-distance event.
“It’s different, I can say that,” he laughed.
Klimper also won the 300 hurdles, and he’ll likely be joining Hernandez — who won the 100 hurdles at Clint Wells — for the state finals.
“Last year I started out doing all throwing stuff, because I didn’t really know where to fit in because there were so many people in the running rounds who were so much faster,” Klimper said, noting his ranking is comfortably within the top 10 of 3A boys in hurdles. “I’m feeling pretty confident in that now.”
Duzik’s win in the 800 run rounded out the track victories, while Keenan Hildebrandt and Morgan Lawton kept breaking their own bests by winning the discus events with their farthest throws to date, Hildebrandt also winning the boys shot put.
Charli Earle, close behind Lawton in second place with her own best discus toss, said the burst of wet weather was not surprising during the MCHS meet.
“The rain was wet for forever, but we made the best of it,” she said.
Earle has her sights set on state, hopefully in the discus and shot alike — though the former is more likely — for her, fellow senior Lawton and freshman Morgan Nelson.
“It would be cool to take three of us,” she said.
The Clint Wells was the conclusion to the season for some competitors, while others will continue on to the Western Slope Multi-Leagues Meet next week in Grand Junction, as well as a following Junction invite leading up to state.
And, though it’s still weeks away, runners, jumpers and throwers can’t help but look forward to the big time.
“It’s gonna be a fun-filled weekend,” Klimper said.

Mark Hillman: Reelection is Democrats’ true priority
God saw fit to stop at ten commandments, but politicians can’t leave well enough alone, so a series of “Eleventh Commandments” apply to them. One of those admonishes: Thou shall not make the voters more…
