Hockey teams compete in tournament, with costumes

It was Craig hockey in Mardi Gras style: hockey first, party second.

That was the order of business in the annual Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament played at the Loudy Simpson Ice Rink last week.

Craig’s team, the Puck Ewes, took fourth in the eight-team field. Craig drop–ped its third-place match against Durango.

Crested Butte won the tournament, beating Tell–uride in Saturday’s championship match.

Celebrations came later at the Holiday Inn, where skaters gathered for a post-tournament party and cos–tume competition.

The Mar–di Gras look, complete with beads and glittering wigs, carried the day. Telluride’s players didn’t win on the ice, but they took the prize for their Mardi Gras costumes.

Puck Ewes’ wing Jamie Eckroth said the tournament has grown every year, and she said she ex—-pects that trend to continue.

“The turnout was excellent,” she said. “We probably had more than 120 people in town playing.”
