Heidi Cardenas: Too cold for recess

To the editor:

I have wanted to write this for a long time now and after reading the story about the school district’s policy on cold weather recess, I felt it was necessary.

When I read the superintendent’s comment, “It could be 11 degrees, but if the wind is crisp and biting, the principal can make a decision,” it made me mad.

The principals have the right to make this decision but have not actually done so.

My kids go to East Elementary School and a few weeks ago the wind was blowing and extremely cold, and yet principal Sarah Hepworth had them outside.

It was cold enough I made my kids wear their snow pants and boots just to stay warm.

They had to stand outside in the blistering cold and yet principal Hepworth was inside where it was nice and toasty.

Maybe if we start sending her the doctor’s bills after they are sick from standing outside, she would reconsider letting them inside.

I know I am not the only parent who thinks this way. I personally think even 10 degrees and no wind is too chilly to be outside.

If your kids were at home, you would not be letting them outside at that temp.
