New Athletics Day in to make back to school simpler for Moffat County students, parents

Moffat County School District will host Athletics Day Aug. 3 at Moffat County High School to prepare MCHS and Craig Middle School sports participants for the coming season mentally and physically.

Back-to-school events kick off on Thursday with a new event for high school and middle school student athletes and their parents.

Moffat County School District will host Athletics Day, starting at 11 a.m. Aug. 3. The day is intended to be a full day of preparation for the fall sports season, complete with conditioning, physicals, concussion testing and educational presentations for Moffat County High School and Craig Middle School.

"A lot of times parents and students have to attend multiple meetings… in this one day you could get it all done," said CMS Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Sara Linsacum.

Most events will be at the high school with afternoon physicals at Memorial Regional Health Medical Clinic.

Exams will involve a check of vital signs, muscular skeletal systems and past medical history.

"The sports physical is specifically designed to monitor kids for things that could become worse if not detected prior to playing sports," said Pediatrician Dr. Kristie Yarmer, who will be one of the providers giving physicals.

While they should not replace a well-child check, sports physicals can be very helpful in screening possible concerns for follow-up with a primary care physician.

In one case, Yarmer discovered a heart murmur in a girl that turned out to be a very serious heart disease that could have put the girl at risk if she had played sports.

The Colorado High School Activities Association requires students complete a physical exam prior to practicing or competing. Exams must be:

• Signed by an MD, DO, school physical certified chiropractor, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant licensed by the State of Colorado

• Current within the last 12 months

• On file with principal or athletic director prior to first practice

"Athletics Day is a great opportunity for kids to come out and get a physical in preparation for the 2017-18 school year," said MRH Vice President of Operations Jennifer Riley.

The cost is $15 and parents must complete a consent form found on the hospital Facebook and webpages.

Students unable to undergo a physical on Aug. 3 can visit MRH's clinic year-round. Northwest Colorado Health also offers $15 sports physicals.

"This is an opportunity to make sure they are up-to-date on immunizations and health screenings, and for students and/or their parents to discuss questions and concerns with a health care provider," stated NCH Marketing Coordinator Tamera Manzanares in an email.

Athletics Day will end with guest speakers from Positive Coaching Alliance.

"We've talked for a long time about bringing someone in to establish a foundation, a philosophy about the importance of athletics to our students. These are people who really, really get it," Linsacum said. "We want to encourage anyone, parents, grandparents, interested members of the community, who'd like to come to attend."
