— Year in and year out, the Craig community pulls together to help families and friends in need.

Thursday was no different when service staff at JW Snack's Bar & Grill donated their tips to help a Craig family whose four children all suffer from a rare malformation called Chiari.

JW Snack's informed the community of its fundraising efforts so that people would frequent the restaurant on Thursday night.

Over $6,500 was raised in six hours through tips and donations from those who opened their pocketbooks to help the Klein family pay for medical expenses.

The Klein family has four kids and all of them have Chiari.

Aveahna Klein, 8, has already had one brain surgery and suffers from chronic pain that often leaves her crying and sleepless. Her doctors require her to be off medications prior to surgery.

"As a Godmother it breaks my heart to watch Aveahna be in as much pains as she's in. It's a daily struggle. She might be weak and have rough days but her faith never waivers. They are living on a prayer right now," Mannon said.

The Klein family is facing steep upfront medical and travel costs as two of their young daughters prepare to undergo medical treatment in New York for Chiari malformations.

"We provided the venue and the community brought the money. We raised much more than expected. The community support was amazing," said JW Snack's Bar Manager Michelle Jones.

JW Snack servers Beth Payton, Jessica Barrett and Natasha Wilson joined Jones in giving their tips to support a family they hadn't met until the night of the benefit.

"We are a drop in the bucket compared to what the community donated," Jones said.

Customers turned out in droves, doubling volume from a typical Thursday night, she said.

It was a night filled with laughter, tears and cheers as staff rang the bar bell after every donation.

"When I walked through the door it was evident that there was an electricity in the air of giving and it was unlike any feeling I have every experienced in my own restaurant. It was like stepping into a giant warm room of love," said restaurant owner Danny Griffith.

The tally for Thursday night included a partial match by an anonymous donor and donations were still trickling in on Friday and through the weekend.

Jones and the JW Snack's team will present the funds to the family on Monday.

"I have been absolutely blown away with the kindness and selfless acts others have shown our family. It’s a very humbling experience. We truly live in the best little community and I thank God daily for the people of Craig," said Krissy Klein, mother of the Klein kids.

Community fundraising efforts will continue. Chaos Ink created special "Team Klein" t-shirts. Sales of shirts continue until May 5. Order forms are available at JW Snack's.

Friends Patricia Vaughn, Hanna Mannon and La Shanna Cox organized a community pulled pork dinner and auction benefit. Dinner is being provided by Memorial Regional Health and auction provided for free by CP Auction Service.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and the auction at 7 p.m. on May 5 at the Center of Craig. Cost of the dinner is $10 and auction items have been donated by over 100 businesses.

Diner tickets are available from the three friends and will be available at the door.
