Health briefs for July 26, 2014: General surgeon to start at The Memorial Hospital
Dr. X. Alexis Driggs will begin her time with The Memorial Hospital, her first day with the organization is scheduled for July 30.
Most recently working in Oakland, California, Driggs will provide a number of surgical opportunities for Northwest Colorado residents, with a specialty in laparoscopic procedures.
TMH also will host a meet-and-greet event for the community to meet their newest team member from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5.

Pregnancy Center fundraiser in final week
The Yampa Valley Pregnancy Center FUNdraiser Summer Walk-a-thon will wrap up at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Moffat County High School track.
Those who bring in the most funds or walk the greatest recorded steps also will receive prizes.

Visiting Nurse Association to feature free screenings
Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association will provide free cardiovascular screenings from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 28 and 29 at its Craig location at 745 Russell St.
Screenings include total Cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, blood glucose and body mass index and are made by appointment only.

Life-change events can impact insurance eligibility
Colorado residents who have had a life-change event in the past month may qualify for health insurance coverage through Connect for Health Colorado outside of the open enrollment period.
Among the possible conditions:
• Marriage, birth, adoption and placement for foster care.
• Your previous insurance plan or Medicaid coverage was canceled or ended.
• You changed jobs and lost your employer-sponsored insurance.
• You gained citizenship or immigration status.
• You experienced a change in incarceration status.
• You moved to Colorado.

Visiting Nurse Association offers incentive for new mothers
Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering the Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program.
The free program offers prenatal smoking cessations sessions. Expectant moms that quit smoking, stay quit during their pregnancy and stay smoke-free after their baby is born will receive a monthly voucher for free diapers, for as long as 12 months.

A veteran in Moffat County is facing a handful of felony charges after police say he broke into a family member’s gun safe while on drugs when they confronted him for pawning an expensive tool.
