Hayden volleyball falls to undefeated Paonia

Ben Ingersoll

— The Hayden High School volleyball team has been looking forward to Saturday’s showdown with Paonia, the undisputed top team in the conference.

But it was “just one of those days,” Tigers coach Christene Planansky said, as Hayden’s five-match win streak was snapped in straight games, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20.

The loss should bump Hayden down in league rankings, Planansky said.

The Tigers lost libero Belle Mazzola to injury in the game, and Plananksy said her vacancy threw the team for a bit of a loop. Effort, however, wasn’t an issue.

“Both teams played really, really well all around,” Plananksy said. “We were able to shut them down on the net quite a few times as well as get a few kills, but overall they outplayed us.”

Vail Christian jumped Hayden in the 2A/1A Western Slope standings as the Tigers dropped to 9-4 overall on the season. Paonia, meanwhile, improved to a perfect 14-0.

Hayden will be back in front of the net Friday in a trip to Baggs, Wyo., to take on Little Snake River. The Tigers’ final home match of the season is Oct. 18 against Vail Mountain.
