Hayden School District voters overwhelmingly approve redistricting for at-large school board seats

Shall the plan adopted by the Board of Education of the Hayden School District, which changes the director district plan of representation for elected directors of the Board of Education to an at-large plan of representation, be approved?

— In a special mail-in election Tuesday, voters in the Hayden School District voted, 250-55, to redistrict so that all Hayden School Board members are elected at-large.

The change was intended to attract more candidates and make the races more competitive. It takes effect this fall when three of five seats are up for election.

“You want contested elections, you want people who are interested, and we’re hoping this will open this up more,” Superintendent Mike Luppes said about redistricting while alluding to past elections that have been canceled because of a lack of contested races or even a lack of candidates altogether (board members are appointed in those situations).

Luppes previously said the pros of the change would be the prospect of more contested elections and the adoption of a system that ensures “the best candidates are elected” regardless of where they live in the district.

Before Tuesday’s election, School Board members could only run in the district in which they lived.

About 1,300 ballots were mailed to voters for the election.
