Hayden girls hoops opens 2011 with win

Team wins at Basalt, 62-43

— The Hayden High School girls basketball team started the post-holiday season much like the team finished its pre-holiday run.

Hayden used its defense to key the team to a 62-43 win at Basalt on Tuesday.

The Tigers, now 6-1, used a 10-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take an 18-12 lead they never would give up.

“We had to work for it,” Hayden coach Eric Hamilton said. “Our defense looked pretty good. We had a lot of good fast breaks.”

After halftime, Hayden erased any chance of a Basalt comeback by scoring 20 points in the quarter, led by Brette Frentress’ nine points in the third quarter. Frentress led all Hayden scorers with 19. Aubree Haskins added 13 points, and Kyra Rolando added 10.

“We worked pretty hard over Christmas,” Hamilton said. “I felt like we were ready to get back to game time. Now the games come just so quick.”

Hayden begins the league portion of its schedule at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Meeker.

Hamilton said Meeker could present problems with its size inside and skill on the perimeter.

“We need to come out and play solid and show people that we should be the top team in the league,” he said. “We need to prove it this Friday.”
