Hayden football team cruises in opener against Belleview Christian
Steamboat Springs — The Hayden High School football team rolled up an easy win Saturday, downing Belleview Christian School, 48-6, in the season opener.
Hayden had little trouble jumping out to an early lead.
“We got better as the game went along,” Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. “It was a good one for us to work some of those kinks out.”
It started out like a first game, with Hayden committing three penalties on its first four plays including one on the first play of the game that would have been a touchdown.
From there, though, Hayden had little trouble.
Dan Engle ran hard, including touchdowns of 60 and 80 yards. Isaac Bridges, making his debut at quarterback, was 1 of 1 for a touchdown.
Hayden now will find out where it stands. The team plays perennial powerhouse Dayspring Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday.
“Like I told the kids, those are the games you want to play to see where you stack up across the state,” Baumgartner said. “They are one of the top programs. It will feel like a football game.”
