Hayden boys fight through rough night to pick up win No. 2

— It wasn’t pretty, but Hayden High School boys basketball doubled its season win total Friday night.

In what Tigers coach Mike Luppes called an “offensively inconsistent night,” Hayden was able to pull out a 38-31 win at home against Plateau Valley, which has yet to win a league game this year.

“There wasn’t a lot of flow to the game at all,” Luppes said. “We were very, very inconsistent. We’d come down and look great then next position look silly with a turnover.”

And it was tight throughout.

After one quarter, Hayden led 9-8, and then 19-18 heading into halftime. Going into the fourth, the Tigers opened up a small lead, 27-23, and were able to finish the victory, their second of the season.

Senior Greg Frentress led Hayden with 15 points and 21 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards.

“He had a very good, complete game overall,” Luppes said about Frentress. “He has been getting more and more every game and getting confidence inside.”

Dan Engle finished with six points and six rebounds, and Isaac Bridges cashed in 12 points of his own.

“They were just glad to get the win,” Luppes said. “They are excited about that.”

Hayden has another opportunity to pick up a win Saturday when it travels to De Beque, which lost by 38 against Soroco on Friday night.
