United Way honors residents who serve

The Moffat County United Way on Wednesday announced the 2001 Volunteer of the Year, the Outstanding Volunteers and recognized several other residents for their work with local charities.

At Craig City Hall, the Moffat County United Way held a ceremony to honor several volunteers and groups for their volunteer service last year. At the event, the 2001 Volunteer of the Year for Moffat County was awarded to Jeff Hammond.

Craig Youth Soccer Treasurer Ray DuBois nominated Hammond. Craig Youth Soccer is one of several youth organizations to which he donates his time.

According to the nomination letter written by DuBois, Hammond moved to Craig in 1999 and has coached with the Craig Parks and Recreation summer soccer program. He also has coached the CYS U-14 boys team and U-14 girls team, and the Craig Middle School soccer team. He has also served as vice president of the Craig Youth Hockey Association, been a member of the Moffat County United Way board, is a lector at St. Michael’s Catholic Church and participates in fund-raisers, car pools and other activities to support the Northwest Colorado All-Star Wildkat cheerleading squad.

“In between all his efforts to serve others, Jeff always finds time to be a great father and husband,” DuBois wrote. “Jeff and his wife, Fran, have been married for 17 years and have two children.

“Jeff Hammond is truly a great asset to our community and deserving of recognition. Even with all that Jeff does, he can always be heard asking ‘What can I do to help?’

Hammond was caught totally by surprise by the recognition, he said.

“At first, I couldn’t believe I’d even been nominated and then I thought I didn’t do that much to deserve (the award),” Hammond said. “Now, I guess I think I need to live up to it, and try to do more.”

There were also four residents recognized as Outstanding Volunteers for 2001. The Outstanding Volunteers are the runner-up nominations for Volunteer of the Year, and “these people are just as deserving of recognition,” said Corrie Scott, executive director of the Moffat County United Way.

The four Outstanding Volunteers for 2001 were Randy Halsted for his work with Horizons, Don Myers for his work on The Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, Marie Schneider for her work with the Independent Life Center, and Elna Youst for her work with the Community Budget Center.

Two other groups of volunteers that work with the Inter Faith Food Bank and Christmas for Kids were each honored for the service to the community in 2001.
