Bank donates three lots to group

Moffat County Habitat for Humanity hasn’t even selected a family to fill its first project home, but it already is planning its second, third and fourth projects.

Bank of Colorado president Mark Harmon on Monday gave the group the deed to three lots the bank owns on Seventh Street.

“I’m not even sure how we acquired them,” Harmon said, “But it’s always been at the back of my mind to donate them to a worthy cause. When Habitat for Humanity formed, we thought, ‘What a great way to give back to the community.'”

The lots are 25 feet by 100 feet.

“It’s a really great start for us,” President Melinda Bobo said. “For being in our first year, we’re doing really well. Acquiring property is generally a big step for an organization like ours.”

The bank owns 12 lots, but it is restricted by how much it can donate each year.

It’s likely the bank eventually will donate all 12 lots to Habitat for Humanity, Harmon said.

“The bank’s owners are very community-minded,” he said. “Hopefully, we can turn these lots into three houses.”

Habitat for Humanity has purchased a house on Yampa Avenue, which volunteers will remodel. The group eventually will sell the house to an eligible family at a low cost. The group was remodeling the home until it discovered asbestos in the structure.

On Monday, the organization selected a contractor to remove the asbestos, a process Bobo said could take about a week.

“As soon as that’s done, we can get in there and really go nuts,” she said. “Having a family in there by February or March wouldn’t be unrealistic.”
