Gymnasts take on state
For Heather Jenkins, the state gymnastics competition was a new experience. For Rochelle Johnson, it was a bit of a painful, but successful one.
The two gymnasts from Craig competed in the USA Gym-nastics Colorado State meet in Boulder during the weekend.
Jenkins, a first-year Level 7 gymnast, had never been to a state meet before.
“I was kind of excited,” she said. “There were a lot of good girls there.”
Johnson will move up to Level 8 next year after earning an overall score of 34.075. But the performance came with the 17-year-old fighting through pain.
She went to a local doctor and acupuncturist during the past couple of weeks before state to help relieve some of the pain.
“My ankles (which she hurt earlier in the season) were OK,” she said. “But my back was what hurt.”
Jenkins, a fifth-grader, earned her highest score on the balance beam. Her 8.65 was one of three scores in the eights. She had an 8.35 on the vault and an 8.25 on the uneven bars.
Overall she scored a 31.7.
“I was proud of myself on the beam,” she said. “Beam has been my best for a long time.”
According to Gym Star Fun’n’Fit Gymnastics owner Kelly Davidson, Jenkins and the rest of the gymnasts now will focus on the EAGLES competition in June.
Johnson had scores of 9.075 on bars, 8.95 on vault, 8.55 on floor exercise and 7.5 on beam. She was eighth overall on the bars in the competition.
“I’m going to take some time to heal,” she said. “Then I want to go to some camps this summer to get better.”
Davidson said the level of competition was among the best Colorado has seen.
The top overall score was a 38.8 and there were three 9.9 scores on the balance beam.
