Gutsy win in gusty wind

Soccer team beats Eagle Valley

A wind-aided first half for the Eagle Valley High School soccer team gave the Devils a 3-1 lead and a chance to take the wind out of the sails of Moffat County’s plan to win its season finale.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the wind didn’t play favorites and aided them in a similar fashion in the second half.

“We had a shot from Eagle Valley bounce once and get blown over our goalie’s head into the goal,” Moffat County coach Jeff Hammond said. “But then in the second half, the same thing happened to Eagle Valley on one of our shots, so it evened out.”

The Bulldogs came back to score three unanswered goals within the first 17 minutes of the second half to win, 4-3.

“We did just as we have the last six games,” Hammond said. “We scored early in both halves.”

Miguel Martinez, Pepe Loya-Mendoza, Dustin White and Schuyler Hammond scored goals for Moffat County.

Moffat County out-shot the Devils 27 to 14 in the game.

The Bulldogs improved to 9-5-1 for the season and 7-4-1 in the Western Slope League.

Despite the win, Moffat County may stay in fourth place in the league because of winning percentage. With a record of 7-3-2, Rifle has a .700 winning percentage. The Bulldogs have a .636 percentage.

The Bulldogs have a week to wait for the seeding of the state tournament. The 32-team bracket will be announced Sunday by the Colorado State High School Activities Association.

“We have some injuries, so it will be good to heal and rest,” Hammond said. “So we’ll wait and see.”
