Gutierrez considers timing for retirement

As he sat down for the traditional post state championship meal at McDonald’s for the third consecutive year and fifth total, Moffat County High School coach Roman Gutierrez was thinking about more than the title, he was thinking about his future.

“There are so many things that point to say it’s time to get out,” he said.

“But at the same time, things are rolling right now and it’s fun.”

Among the things that point to the time to go out on top for Gutierrez is the fact that Ty Weber was his 13th state champion and his only undefeated champion.

“Thirteen is my lucky number,” Gutierrez said. “So, as far as individual champions go, that would be perfect.”

At the same time, the team championship number of five isn’t quite the goal that he set for himself when he first took over the program 18 years ago.

“When I took over the program they had seven individual champions,” he said.

“So I always told myself that we would get seven team championships to match.”

As he looked around at the wrestlers in the restaurant and thought about the prospect of not returning, it became evident that the decision was not going to be easy.

“It bother me a little just to give up,” he said, fighting back his emotions.

“It’s not going to be an easy decision.”

Gutierrez said he will discuss retirement for about a month with his family to decide if 13 individual titles and 18 years are lucky numbers or if seven state titles is the ultimate goal.
