Gladys Shirley Self

Craig resident Gladys Shirley Self died March 6, 2003, at The Memorial Hospital. She was 80.

Self was born March 6, 1922, in Cookville, Tenn., to Melvin D. and Mae (Breeding) Shipley. She was raised in Tennessee.

She married John Barr in South Carolina in 1938 and moved to California during the war where she worked in the shipyards as a welder.

Following the war, she moved to Jacksonville, Fla. John died in 1972. Self married Charles D. Self in 1992 in Jacksonville. They lived in North Dakota, Georgia and Jacksonville.

Charles died in 1997 and Self moved to Craig to be near her son.

She was a member of the International Showman’s Club in Tampa, Fla., and she enjoyed playing bingo, stock car races, baseball and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. In recent years, she enjoyed going to the mountains with her son and his wife and seeing the beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Self is survived by her daughters, Pat Lackey Barr, of Macon, Ga., and Anna Jones, of Macon; sons, John (Virginia) Barr, of Craig, George (Cathy) Barr, of Ashville, N.C., Billy (Patsy) Jones, of Macon, and Richard Jones, of Hartwell, Ga; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and sisters, Lucille Hagan and Florence Matthews of Jacksonville.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
