Girls junior varsity soccer team excels late in season

With more than half of the team playing soccer for the first time, the Moffat County girls junior varsity soccer team faced a steep learning curve.

The girls showed they were apt students with a win and a tie in their final two games.

“The team came a long way,” coach Rosie Lear said. “They learned to mark on their defenders and played well late in the season.”

The Bulldogs won their first game of season last week in Battle Mountain. On Tuesday, they finished the season with a 1-1 tie against Eagle Valley.

Freshman goalie Tanya Rinehart said she thought that if the season had continued, the team would have continued its winning ways.

“Our record would have been a whole lot better if we could have played from now,” she said.

The team consisted of nine players until the final two weeks, which then it was bolstered by two more players.

“Just having a chance for the younger ones to play is instrumental to the future,” varsity coach Jim Loughran said. “It was good for us to have a feeder program.”

Rinehart, who had never played goalie before, said that the experience everybody earned made the season worth it.

“Just being able to know that we could score goals and do things right was great,” she said. “We improved in everything.”

Lear was learning right along with her team. It was her first year coaching high school soccer.

“We learned it takes a lot of teamwork,” she said. “Our goal was to get a win, and we reached that.”

The JV Bulldogs finished 1-9-1.
