DENVER — Much like the first, the second day of competition at the 3A CHSAA State Championships held a little bit of everything for Moffat County High School wrestlers.
The Bulldogs have two athletes progressing to the semifinals and guaranteed to place. 170-pounder Miki Klimper and 182’s Elias Peroulis continued their opening-day dominance Friday morning to secure wins.
Klimper met with Eaton’s Braeson Lewis for the second time this season, and though the Reds grappler proved more fierce this time, the Bulldog in blue had no fear, earning a 20-6 major decision.
Peroulis met up with fellow Western Sloper Michael Kelly of Grand Valley and promptly had him on his back, getting the win by fall 64 seconds into the bout.
Dagan White (106) and Chris Moschetti (132) were also still alive in the championship quarterfinals Friday morning, but both met with strong resistance.
White fell to Woodland Park’s Zach Dooley and Moschetti to Sheridan’s Homero Navarro to go over to the consolation brackets.
The second-chance rounds were kind to Daniel Caddy, who only had to jog onto the mat and raise his hand to accept a forfeit by Jefferson’s Nick Gallegos to advance in the 138 class.
At 220, Toryn Hume’s persistence paid off with a second-period pin of Trinidad’s Caleb Armijo.
While six Dogs remain in the action, five more finished their state run altogether.
Isiaih Herod (126), Ethan Powers (145), Drake Zimmerman (152), Greg Hixson (160) and Jefferson Piatt (195) all concluded their season Friday morning as they struggled to gain a victory in the consolation rounds.
Craig Press will have more updates on state wrestling.
The National Junior High Finals Rodeo will be bringing in the top cowboy and cowgirl athletes from June 23 to 29 in Huron, South Dakota.
