Gallery: Moffat County basketball vs. Gunnison

Friday night saw Moffat County High School varsity basketball teams take one hard-fought win, one narrow loss against Olathe, and the outcome was much the same Saturday against the Gunnison Cowboys, with a simple bit of role reversal.

MCHS girls rebounded from their jilting 28-27 loss to the Pirates to control the game with Gunnison with a 45-31 victory.

Apart from tying up the total at 27 midway through the third period, Lady Cowboys couldn’t keep up the pace with their Bulldog hosts, with Jana Camilletti hitting a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter as part of 13 points for the day.

Bulldog boys were feeling confident after their 81-75 topping against Olathe, yet they found themselves outpaced by Gunnison’s guys in a 50-46 defeat.

A solid start for Moffat County saw them leading 16-9 in the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. A 10-point run in the third quarter helped them get it to 42-33, but Cowboys came out of nowhere in the next five minutes to put up 14 points before Brent Cook answered back with a finger roll layup to get to 20 points individually and Kasen Brennise fought for a shot to get it to 47-46, only for Gunnison to get just far enough ahead and keep it that way.

MCHS girls stand at 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the 3A Western Slope League, tied with Delta and Cedaredge for first place in the conference. Bulldog boys are 9-8 overall, 2-5 WSL, standing at eighth in the league but could rise as high as fourth with the right circumstances.
