Craig Press Staff Report

From the early morning launch to the late night rocking, Moffat County Balloon Festival held a full day of activities.

The eighth year for the annual event celebrating the unique aircraft had some tricky weather in store, yet after an initial delay in the hours just after dawn, 28 balloonists took to the wild blue yonder above Loudy-Simpson Park.

Amid the excitement of the balloon launch itself, a lengthy schedule of activities was in store, including the Elevate Education 5K and One-Mile Fun Run on the park’s course during take-off.

While pilots hovered above the Yampa River, the Northwest Colorado Health Rubber Ducky Race had cash prizes at stake for entrants, while throughout the park were helicopter displays by Classic Air Medical, as well as the Colorado Cruisers Car Show.

Food and crafts vendors were on site, while bounce houses and performances by juggling troupe We’re Not Clowns provided more family fun, followed by live music from country singer Bill Clark and Front Range country and rock act Narrow Gauge.

Heavy winds in the evening forced organizers to call off the nighttime balloon glow, though Narrow Gauge continued on into the night.

A Sunday launch remains scheduled for 6:30 a.m. at Loudy-Simpson Park.
