On Saturday, residents can support 12 local school groups all at once.

The Moffat County High School Back to School Gala is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Loudy-Simpson Park ice arena. Tickets cost $40 a person and may be purchased at Downtown Books, 543 Yampa Ave., Moffat County High School, Room 102, or at the event.

The inaugural event consolidates fundraising efforts for 11 Moffat County High School organizations and a Craig Middle School sports team into one event.

Proceeds from the event will support the following high school groups and sports: Distributive Education Clubs of America, Future Business Leaders of America, girls soccer, yearbook, boys basketball, the junior class, Key Club, Alternative Cooperative Education class, speech and debate, choir and band. The Craig Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team also will benefit from the fundraiser.

“The Craig community has been extremely supportive of clubs and sports teams, and the Gala was created to reduce the overall number of fundraisers performed each year,” event organizers wrote in a news release. “By having one large event and splitting the proceeds, each of the 12 groups can reduce, or possibly eliminate, their other annual fundraisers.”

A ticket to the event buys residents a buffet-style meal, access to live and silent auctions and a presentation by Marlin Briscoe, the former Denver Bronco and the first African-American starting quarterback in professional football history.

“We were looking for something that the community could relate to and someone that had a good message to bring (regarding) perseverance and community support,” said David Grabowski, MCHS math teacher and Gala chair.

Autographed items from the Denver Nuggets’ Allen Iverson and Olympic Champion Mark Spitz are some of the objects locals can bid on at the event.

Gala organizers are hoping to draw about 300 people to the fundraiser this year, and Grabowski hopes the event becomes an annual occasion.

“We’re hoping that each year it gets bigger and that more groups join us,” he said, adding that more sports teams could get involved with the Gala next year.

How much of the proceeds groups garner from the event this year, however, depends partially on how much work they put into it.

“We’re hoping to try and divide (proceeds) equally among the clubs involved that worked at it,” Grabowski said.
