Fruita sweeps away Bulldogs
MCHS volleyball team loses 6th match in a row
September 24, 2008
Fruita volleyball coach Amelia Conner didn’t want it to happen again.
The Wildcats let a two-games-to-none lead slip in a heartbreaking loss to Durango on Saturday, and the varsity girls volleyball coach wanted to make sure Tuesday’s game at Moffat County wasn’t a repeat of the weekend’s events.
Fruita (2-2 Southwestern League, 8-3 overall – 5A) cruised past the host Bulldogs (1-5 Western Slope League, 2-8 overall – 4A) 25-11, 25-7 and 25-20.
“We were hungry for a win,” Conner said. “We had a sense of urgency when we came up here. We wanted to prove that we could close a team out.”
Unfortunately for MCHS, the Wildcats took out their frustration on the Bulldogs.

Tied at two in the first game, Fruita senior Lindsey Henke (30 assists) reeled off eight straight service points, and the visitors never looked back.
MCHS senior Megan Trujillo’s kill with the score 19-11 in Fruita’s favor, would be the last point Moffat County would tally until nearly midway through Game 2.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second frame behind the fierce net play of Katie Lewis (12 kills), Mary McGee (eight kills) and Maia Sadler (six kills).
“We started out super strong,” Sadler said. “We kept our energy up and really turned it on.”
So much so, that even a ball deflecting off the Moffat County gymnasium rafters ended up being a kill for Sadler.
“We did a good job of stepping up,” Conner said. “Everyone played well. We had a solid game all around.”
The Bulldogs fought back in Game 3 behind Trujillo (seven kills) and senior Ariel Sanchez (six kills).
Sanchez’s ace brought the home team within one at 14-13, but MCHS couldn’t quite catch its rhythm.
Up 24-20, McGee lined an ace down the left side of the Bulldogs’ court, emphatically ending the match.
“We fought back in the third game,” Bulldogs coach Brianna Montgomery said. “We started slow. We still have to figure out what starts us.”
The Bulldogs look to end their six-game slide Friday at Palisade.
