Friends of NRA use resources to help Craig youth succeed

As the saying goes “knowledge is power” and the Bears Ears Sportsman Club, in conjunction with the Yampa Valley Friends of the National Rifle Association (YVFNRA), is doing its best to pass on knowledge to youth in Craig and Hayden.
Over the past four years the organizations have donated $17,000 into the community. Donations have helped fund the 4-H marksmanship programs in both Craig and Hayden. They have also begun to set up funding for a Junior Olympic archery program and an Ed the Eagle gun safety program. Their latest contribution to the community has come in the form of four $1,000 education scholarships presented to Will Myers of Hayden, Amanda Grant of Craig, Graham Roberts of Craig and Alison White of Craig.
The group has also donated $1,000 to the Hayden and Craig high school and public libraries for firearm safety books and materials.
Patty Cattoor, community chair for the YVFNRA, has experienced family tragedy of her own due to the misuse of firearms and believes the group has an important message for youth.
“Our goal is to make sure that we can get as many kids involved with these programs and in shooting sports as we can,” said Cattoor. “It is vital that they learn how to operate firearms safely and that they know they are not toys.”
