Save wilderness areas from heavy usage

To the editor:

This month, 157 parcels of BLM land totaling nearly 1.7 million acres appear destined to be leased by gas and oil development companies. A number of these parcels comprise beautiful country adjacent to Dinosaur National Monument. These leases amount to about 25,000 acres, and four of them are actually within areas that have been considered for proposed wilderness. Oil and gas development adjacent to Dinosaur National Monument is a mistake and will have long-term negative effects on some of Moffat County’s most scenic and sensitive land.

Harper’s Corner is one of the true natural gems in our part of the state. The road to it was not built to handle heavy truck traffic. With gas and oil development, many new roads will be built, scarring the landscape and destroying the habitat of already stressed plants and animals, including elk and the Black Footed Ferret. Tourists spend their time and money to see nature at its best, not to be harassed by heavy truck traffic, oil rigs and noise pollution.

We must be very careful about sacrificing the natural beauty that abounds in our county to the rapacious desires of Big Oil and gas. Let’s save what is left of Moffat County while we still can and leave something of the natural beauty that surrounds us for our children and our children’s children to cherish and enjoy.
