Former resident dies in accident
A former Craig resident died after an illegal drag race competition in Grand Junction Wednesday night.
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to a crash involving an automobile and a pedestrian at 10:10 p.m. and found 20-year-old Shane Michael Gaulke, formerly of Craig, lying in the road with several teen-agers nearby. Gaulke was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction with many injuries and placed in the intensive care unit. Gaulke died the next evening.
Gaulke was apparently injured while watching two men race cars and was struck by one of the vehicles after the driver lost control. The driver, Jesse Nolen, 19, was booked into the Mesa County Jail and later charged with vehicular homicide.
A CSP investigation revealed Nolen’s car was traveling about 70 mph before he lost control. The posted speed limit on the road was 35 mph. Alcohol is also being investigated as a possible factor in the accident.
The body recovered from a drowning at Harvey Gap Reservoir has been identified.
