Former Moffat County players enjoy homecoming
Members of the 1967 football team have enjoyed the royal treatment all week, but being back in the town they grew up in with the friends they grew up with has been reward enough, according to the players.
Darrel Camilletti, a junior from the state runners-up in the 1967 season, said it was fun to see his teammates, some of whom he hadn’t seen in years.
“It’s been good to get together,” Camilletti said. “Some of these guys, we haven’t seen each other since we graduated.”
It was an effort from the Moffat County Booster Club to bring back several of the players and honor their success. While several of the players honored still live in Craig or the surrounding area, some were coming from far away.
Dan Carpenter, an all-state lineman from the team, was visiting from Sandpoint, Idaho, while all-american tailback Mike Loyd lives in the Denver area. Camilletti said it didn’t take long for the players to get talking about their run from that year of football.
“We talked a lot about the season the couple of days,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of reminiscing actually, talking about what happened. One of our coaches was here, so it’s been an interesting couple of days.”
On Thursday the Booster Club hosted a prime rib dinner with the team, community members and the current Moffat County football players. Then, they rode on a float in the Homecoming parade and were introduced to the crowd before Friday night’s game.
Camilletti said it was a fun experience from start to finish.
“The dinner was great,” he said. “It was good to be with the kids and see the high school kids there, and it was fun to be with the public and reminisce with them, because there was some big support when we were going through the playoffs. It’s just been a nice couple of days for the football players.”
