Former Craig nurse celebrates holiday abroad

Hello everyone:

We just celebrated one of our biggest holidays here, Garifuna Settlement Day Nov. 19. The Garifuna are Africans who apparently were being shipped to the USA in the 1800s as slaves, but settled in Belize instead.

The drumming and dancing goes on for days! We had hudut (a stew of fish, coconut milk and grated bananas) and lots of barbecued lobster tails! I was quite tired … once a year I dance til dawn …

We have had a cold front here in the tropics for the last week. It has gotten down to 65 some nights. I love using a blanket at night! Friday I had a slumber party for four teen-aged girls who were amazed that I had a blanket for each of them. We had pizza and chocolate cake; listened to music and decorated my Christmas tree. What fun!

Today I went on a postpartum home visit to a young woman who had a C-section in Belize City on Thursday. She was sent home yesterday. She and the baby are doing very well; she has an extremely supportive and helpful husband. I removed the baby’s umbilical cord clamp with my Leatherman today … a first for me!!

I had planned to stay in Belize for Thanksgiving, but my former husband, Allan, was recently in a car accident.

I have this overwhelming need to see him and make sure he’s OK, so I invited myself to Thanksgiving at his sister’s home in Minneapolis. She and her family have graciously welcomed me there, so I will get to spend the holiday with Allan’s family, Allan and Dustin.

Happy holidays!
