Flu absences isolated to Craig Middle School

If there’s a flu epidemic among Moffat County students, it’s isolated at Craig Middle School.

Other district schools report typical attendance levels Tues–day.

“We’re right at 6 percent, which is normal for us,” high school secretary Anna Nitschke said.

About 20 percent — 60 students — of the students at Craig Middle School were out sick Monday.

They’re rebounding slowly, school secretary Beth Gilchrist said. On Tuesday, about 45 students were out.

“There are still some who are coming back who probably shouldn’t,” she said.

Moffat County elementary schools had a lower-than-typical absentee rate Tuesday, but that didn’t necessarily reflect students’ health.

Few students were absent at Ridgeview Elementary, school secretary Donna Juergens said. “It’s Valentine’s Day at an elementary school. We have kids crying if the nurse tries to send them home.”

About 35 of the school’s 240 students were out two weeks ago, but 12 were gone Tuesday.

No one would speculate about why Craig Middle School was the only school hard hit by the flu bug. And no one was ready to say other schools were out of the woods.

“It’ll probably spread, just give it time,” Nitschke said.

She’s not the only one knocking on wood.

“These things tend to run in trends, going building to building,” Sunset Elementary School secretary Goldie Arroyo said.
