Firecracker Scramble golf tournament kicks off Fourth of July in Craig

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Chuck Sandberg, who took fourth at the Firecracker Scramble at Yampa Valley Golf Course, said that Craig has one of the nicest golf courses in Colorado.

To start their celebration of Independence Day, a crowd of golfers took advantage of the beautiful morning weather and headed to Yampa Valley Golf Course for the first Firecracker Scramble.

"Part of the fundraising portion of this pays for all the flowers on the golf course," head golf pro David Hardison said.

Fifteen teams of 45 golfers came out to the course to play in the three-per-team, 18-hole scramble with a random draw. Playing with more unfamiliar teammates in a random draw can add some difficulty to the situation, but Gary Anderson, Cheryl Ivy and Bret Steels made it work, taking first place with a 65 score, pocketing $70 each in pro-shop money.

Ted Reliham, Patsy Grieve and Jake Zakrazewski took second with a total score of 68, winning $60 each for pro-shop spending. Rick Nelson, Shelly Fox and Jim Hibbard got third place with a score of 70 and $50 each in credit money.

"I love it because you have to play with people you've never played with before," said Chuck Sandberg, who took fourth with his team’s score of 71. "The course is in such good shape. It's the best course in the state."

The Firecracker Scramble was the first tournament in July after a busy June at Yampa Valley Golf Course. The course has another busy weekend ahead, with the TGIF Hawaiian Luau Scramble on Friday and the Colowyo Mine golf tournament Saturday.

The largest women's tournament of the year, the 36-hole Ladies Silver Bullet, is July 13 and 14.

There still are a large number of tournaments to be played this summer, but Hardison said there always is space for the casual golfer to come play a round, as well.

"Other than the Silver Bullet, those days are pretty well set, but we can usually fit you in somewhere on the course," he said. "So people wanting to play should still come out."
