A small fire ignited and quickly was suppressed Friday afternoon on the side of U.S. Highway 40 about a mile west of Craig.

The blaze formed on and around an electric pole on the south side of the highway, but its cause was unknown on the scene.

“We’re not sure if it was from the transformer (on the pole), but it appears that could have been the cause,” said Craig Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Troy Hampton. “We’ll have to wait on Yampa Valley (Electric Association) to determine that.”

By the time fire crews arrived shortly after 4:30 Friday, the fire was almost completely suppressed. Hampton said another party had aided in extinguishing the flames.

“When we got here it was off the pole, and just some small flames on the ground,” Hampton said. “Some passer-by had stopped and put it out on the pole.”

The flames were about 20 feet from the highway on the south side but did not get to the point of threatening any structures in the area, which all were on the north side of the road.

“If they could have jumped the highway, then maybe it would have been a problem,” Hampton said. “But with the highway being a pretty big break, that was unlikely.”
