Fire officials turn attention to Beaver Flat Tops Fire

Ground crew and air support personnel were expected to be released Wednesday from the Big Ridge Fire southeast of Rangely, the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit reported in a news release.

The fire remained at 18 acres, and fire officials expected full containment to be reached Wednesday night.

Fire personnel moved quickly to secure the fire perimeter in anticipation of thunderstorms that could have hindered road access in the area, according to the release.

However, there’s another fire requiring attention.

The Beaver Flat Tops Fire is 32 acres, and burning spruce/fir about 20 miles south of Hayden near Stinsby Reservoir in Routt National Forest.

The fire was reported about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Tankers dropped retardant on the fire Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The Roos-

evelt and Rogue River Hot Shots handled the initial attack.

Full containment is the management strategy, the fire management unit reported. Assigned to the fire are four Hot Shots crews, 16 smokejumpers and three helicopters.

Long-range weather projections indicate this fall maybe warmer and drier than usual, according to the release.

U.S. drought monitor maps indicate Northwest Colorado as “abnormally dry.”
